23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever. (7:23-28)
Intercessor (23-25): Again, the author contrasts the mortality of the Levitical priests with Jesus as the great high priest. And because he is the permanent priest, he is continuously able to intercede or mediate between believers and the Father and eternally able to provide salvation for all who come to the Father through Christ. Jesus’ priesthood continues but is not passed on to others.
Once for All (26-27): Like Melchizedek, the king of righteousness, Jesus is innocent, without blemish, and distinct from those to whom he ministers (sinners). Further, because he is innocent, he is exalted above creation and does not need to offer sacrifices for himself. He offered himself as a sacrifice once for all past, present, and future; not for himself because he was blameless, but for all.
Eternal High Priest (28): While the law could not save and mortal, sinner high priests had to offer sacrifices continually, Christ was appointed the perfect, permanent high priest and made one sacrifice for all. Therefore, the believer can come to the Great High Priest with boldness and confidence.
Challenge: Have you met the Great High Priest? Have you accepted his offer of salvation? If so, are you assured of that salvation? Do you have a personal relationship with the Great High Priest?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
