Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. 3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. 4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. 5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” 6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. (Hebrews :1-6)
The Location of the High Priest (1-3): The writer continues the contrast between Jesus and Levitical high priests. First, he points out that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God in the true tabernacle; one not built by man, where he ministers. By sitting on the throne, he is a king. Second, Jesus is seated unlike Levitical priests who served standing.
A Specific Sacrifice (4-5): Jesus did not perform priestly duties while on earth because he did not have a Levitical lineage. Some believe gifts referred to sacrifices. We know that it was essential that he offered himself as a divine sacrifice. He did not offer animal sacrifices. The Lord’s instructions to Moses on building the tabernacle were very detailed, setting a pattern for what was to come. Indeed, the old covenant pointed to the new covenant by setting out moral law, convicting of sin, and priestly sacrifices. Thus, the failure of the old covenant begged for a new and better covenant.
A Better Covenant (6): The new covenant is better because Christ is both the mediator between God and man and the guarantee of the new covenant. He keeps that relationship in effect because man fails to keep up his end of the agreement. The new covenant is based on the promise of an inner understanding of truth, an intimate relationship with God, and the absolute forgiveness of sin.
Challenge: How well are you keeping up your end of the covenant? Are you being Spirit led or are muddling through life with good intentions and self-discipline?
The law is about you looking at yourself. The new covenant is all about you seeing Jesus. Joseph Prince
