7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. 8 For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 9 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” 13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. (Hebrews 8:7-13)
Going through the Motions (7): The old covenant was one filled with unsatisfying actions or rituals; the preparation and bringing of sacrifices, the actions of the priests and the high priest, the garments of the priesthood, the keeping of rules, etc. But it was never enough. It had to be repeated over and over.
The Old Covenant: God established the old covenant; therefore, it was perfect. The problem was that man could not keep it. But the Lord knew that, and already had a plan in place to solve that problem (Genesis 3:15). The problem was not with the old covenant; it was with man. The old covenant was perfect in pointing to the need for a new covenant.
The Better Covenant (8-12): The writer quoted Jeremiah31:31-34 to make the case for a new and better covenant. The new covenant:
(1) Was foretold by the prophet (8)
(2) Applied to both Israel and Judah, indicating old divisions will be healed (8)
(3) Will be established by the Lord (8)
(4) Follows a pattern established by the old covenant (9, 13)
(5) Was unlike the old covenant that man could not keep (9)
(6) Has transforming power because it is written on the hearts and minds of man (10)
(7) Establishes an intimate and mutual relationship (10)
(8) Provides a direct knowledge of God previously available to a select few (11)
(9) Enables direct communication with the Lord, not through intermediaries (11) and
(10) Reveals God’s merciful character that gives man access to the Lord (12)
(11) Brings true and final forgiveness (12)
Obsolete (13): The author summarized the Jeremiah quotation by stating that the new covenant supersedes the old covenant, which was inadequate, and was obsolete. He points out that the old covenant was fading away. Note that worship at the temple ceased when it was destroyed in 70 AD.
Challenge: Are you experiencing the transforming power of the Holy Spirit? Are you becoming a new person? Are you experiencing God working through you?
Only as He is faithful will His covenants stand, and His promises be honored. Only as we have complete assurance that He is faithful may we live in peace and look forward with assurance to the life to come. A. W Tozer
